Hanging Christmas Lights x Biology

Today, we hung Christmas lights on our dorm entrance. In addition to the fun of hanging in and out of three separate windows on the second floor, we encountered the everlasting problem of how to refer to the ends of the strands of lights.

Male and female? Seemed much too sexist and biological essentialist for our liking.
Thingie and other thingie? Definitely not specific enough.
Indented and convex? Not ideal.
Having essential electrical contacts and lacking essential electrical contacts? Not accurate, and further privileging male genitalia.

The best we came up with was giver and receptor, which I'm still not happy about.

Any better suggestions?
